Chapter Twelve

“Blaine, you're going to be late.” Lucas knocked on her door. “And it's the first day you have Andrew and Daisy working for you. C'mon, sunshine. Show your face!”

The door flew open, but a sunshiny face didn't stare back at him.

“Bad night?” Lucas guessed.

“This is going to be a loooooooong pregnancy,” she mumbled. “You're a brave soul for dealing with me.”

“Randy's paying me the big bucks,” he teased.

She flipped him off before darting toward the bathroom.

Lucas headed back to the dining room to finish up with Emily's breakfast.

She grinned at him from her high chair. “Daddy!”

He loved hearing her say his name. His girls were his world. Becoming a husband and a father had always been a pipe dream, but when he'd actually found love, Lucas couldn't believe his luck.

He sat beside his daughter after pouring himself a cup of coffee.

While she babbled and ate, he couldn't keep his thoughts straight.

Blaine walked into the dining room. “So, now that it's just us, will you tell me what the hell is up? I know you didn't want to talk much last night while at the arcade, and I get that, but now you need to spill.”

He heaved a sigh.

“Oh God, it's bad, isn't it?” She rushed to sit beside him.

“She has Parkinson's,” Lucas said quietly. “They've known for a while, and the symptoms are starting to show.”

Blaine's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't say a word.

“And they don't want me to tell Avery right now. Not until she's done with her tour.”

She covered her mouth with a hand. “Oh, Lucas...”

“Yeah.” He swallowed hard. “I hate this. All of it.”

“I don't … I … wow.” Blaine fumbled over her words.

“This is going to devastate her. Avery, I mean. They want her to follow her dreams and move to Nashville.”

“And it's going to change her mind when she finds out her mom is sick.”

“She's going to be torn, for sure. It's going to take a lot of convincing, but Mom doesn't want to be the reason Avery never pursues her dreams.”

“I knew something was wrong, but I didn't expect this.” Blaine's voice came out shaky.

“I know. I told them I wouldn't say anything for at least twenty-four hours, but I can't keep this a secret for long. Not from Avery. I promised never again.”

“And everyone's already noticing.”

“Exactly.”

Blaine stared at the table in silence.

“Avery called last night, too, freaking out because there was a mishap with the buses, but turned out it was a Kyra prank. She already senses something wrong.”

“Done!” Emily proclaimed, holding up her empty bowl.

Lucas took it from her, washed it, then cleaned up Emily's face. He planted a kiss on her forehead, then set her down. “Go find today's clothes and we'll get you dressed.”

“Okay!” Emily ran off, singing.

When he turned back to Blaine, she had a smile on her face.

“What?”

“I love how you parent. I can't wait to see Randy hold our baby,” Blaine said through her tears. “And here I go, getting super sappy and emotional.”

“Love and parenthood does that to a person.
